Second Grade
RELIGION
Second Grade Religion curriculum studies the content of our Catholic faith based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church and how to connect the Catholic faith with everyday life. They learn how to pray, write formal prayers, and worship God. Students are introduced to scripture stories, feasts and seasons of the Church, saints, the basic fundamentals of liturgy, and attend Mass on a weekly basis. Students are given an assessment after the completion of each chapter of their religion book. A formal program of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist is used to teach the students prior to receiving these Sacraments.
READING
Our Second Grade reading program incorporates the reading of an anthology of classic literature along with vocabulary, comprehension, and reading skills. Our students have a reading workbook and are given a reading extension worksheet for each story read. They are strongly encouraged to read on their own at every opportune moment, which includes reading at home and during special times during the school day. They are given Accelerated Reading tests during their library time.
SPELLING
Spelling lists are assigned weekly and our students are tested on these words. Our spelling program has a connection to phonics, stimulates comprehension, transfers spelling skills to students’ writing, and helps our students understand spelling strategies.
PHONICS
Second Graders learn an advance master of the letter-sound relationship. Our program helps to empower our students with the skills they need to become readers for life.
ENGLISH
Our English program is composed of writing stories, along with learning and reinforcing punctuation and grammar skills. Students are given quizzes, compile classroom books containing their stories, write daily classroom news, and write in their personal journals. Second Graders are writing every day.
MATH
Our Math curriculum consists of numbers, operations, graphing, 2-digit addition and subtraction, money, time, and data. Our students have daily worksheets, and workbook pages. They are given chapter and unit assessments. They are also given timed tests on basic facts.
SCIENCE
The main components of our Science program are the study of the earth long ago, the solar system, weather, and how plants grow and change. Our students use worksheets, hands-on centers, and field trips as tools for scientific discovery. They are given a test at the completion of each unit and maintain a science folder containing factual information.
