Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Elementary School has had many unprecedented student success stories from its graduates. OLQM grads are continually at the top of their class at Brother Rice, University of Detroit Jesuit High School, Marian and Notre Dame Prep.
Below is just a sample of what a few of our graduates have accomplished: Brother Guy Consolmagno, SJ - OLQM graduate, The Vatican's Astronomer See his interview on Channel 4 from Spring 2016 Michael Bouchard, OLQM graduate, Oakland County Sheriff Amanda Burcroff OLQM 2011, a senior at Seaholm High School, was awarded a $1000 dollar scholarship at The Bloomfield Hills All Girls FIRST Robotics Tournament, held Nov. 2nd. There were 32 teams from the Michigan, Indiana, and Canada participating at the event, designed to showcase female drivers, operators, and pit crew members, as they played the game Aerial Assist. Amanda Burcroff is the captain of Birmingham’s Robotics team, and has been a member of the team since her freshman year. Amanda is a National Merit Finalist. Matt Dery was the valedictorian at U of D Jesuit High School for the class of 2010. He volunteered at Focus Hope all four years once a month for four hours. At Focus Hope he would box and deliver food to senior citizens living in Detroit. He was a member of National Honor Society. He volunteered at Queen of Martyrs every Wednesday morning of his senior year. He was a Sunday School Teacher Aid at Queen of Martyrs during his freshman year. He was a Homeroom Representative for two semesters at U of D. Matt was on the golf team freshman and sophomore year and was captain during his sophomore year. He coordinated two blood drives at Queen of Martyrs at the end of his Junior and Senior years. He consistently achieved First Honors. He was given service awards at the end of each year for the amount of service hours he had done. He was a scholar athlete freshman and sophomore years. His class schedule included: AP Chemistry and Biology, Physics, Spanish IV and Calculus. Kelsey DeLave, OLQM 2004, was the Valedictorian of Notre Dame Preparatory’s Class of 2008. During her senior year, Kelsey also captained the girl's cross-country and soccer teams and earned All Catholic and All State honors as the soccer team's goalkeeper. She is graduated from the department of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan and is currently doing research for one of her professors. Sarah Farr, OLQM 2004, received the 2008 Youth in Service Recognition Award by the Birmingham Youth Assistance (BYA). BYA honors middle and high school students for volunteer contributions to their communities each year. Sarah accumulated over 150 hours of community service. Currently, Sarah is a freshman at the University of Dayton studying Broadcast News and Mass Communications and Psychology. Ryan Johnson OLQM '06, CYO Archdiocese of Detroit All-Academic Team, '08 Brother Rice HS He was the 2010 valedictorian at Brother Rice High School. He was the recipient of the Spencer Cole Mitchell Memorial Scholarship which is given on the basis of leadership, community service, good academic work ethic, and a positive disciplinary record. Ryan was the recipient of the Bloomfield Hills Optimists Youth Appreciation Award which is awarded to three seniors based on outstanding community service and leadership. Ryan was nominated and participated in the National Youth and Leadership Forum on Medicine in Washington D.C. Ryan currently works for Ernest and Young in New York. Dan Kapala, OLQM '99, joins the Baby Bombers, a Yankee organization, after playing for the University of Notre Dame. In 7 starts, he was 0-6 with a 3.92 ERA and 23 strikeouts. He was the 46th round draft choice of the New York Yankees. Dan played professional baseball until 2010. He is working as a cost accountant at Plante Moran Nick Kemp, OLQM 2004, graduated from Brother Rice High School in 2008 and received an appointment to attend West Point Military Academy. While at Brother Rice, Nick earned many academic honors and played multiple sports. Haley Kopmeyer, OLQM 2004, earned a full scholarship to play soccer at the University of Michigan. Haley graduated from Bloomfield Hills Lahser in 2008. As a member of the Michigan Hawks soccer club, Haley was only one of two girls to be named an All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. |
Madison Packer, OLQM 2006 Grad, She was part of the very first woman's NHL.
Mary Margaret Payne OLQM 2012 Grad won the Bowman Female Recurve Junior Olympic Archery Development National Championship in Oklahoma City. Mary Margaret is a member of the Royal Oak Archers. John Penington OLQM 2011 Grad, 2015 Brother Rice Valedictorian. John won both the 1,500 and 3,000 meter runs at the AAU track and field National Championships held at Eastern Michigan University from July 26th through August 2nd. He also finished fifth in the 800 meter run and earned All American status in this event as well. John, a senior at Brother Rice is their lone National Merit Scholar. John has set Brother Rice records in Track and Field and Cross Country. John is currently looking into attending a number of Ivy League Universities. Margaret Peterson, OLQM '98, Graphic editor, arts and entertainment reporter for Petoskey News-Review (http://www.petoskeynews.net/reporters/maggie.html) Stacey Scimeca OLQM '06, CYO Archdiocese of Detroit All-Academic Team '07 Marian HS. She was the president of the 2010 graduating class at Marian. She finished in the top ten of her graduating class. She was president of her class her junior and senior years. She played varsity volleyball for three years. Each year her team made it to the state finals, winning the 2009 Volleyball Class A State Championship. She was All-State Academic for this season. Stacey was a National Honor Society Member and secretary of the French Honor Society. Carrie Tamarelli, a 2005 graduate of OLQM. Carrie is one of five Marian seniors who have achieved National Merit Finalist standing in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. Carrie is one of 15,000 seniors in the country who became finalists, and represent less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors. Carrie has an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $35 million. Well done, Carrie! Alex VanTiem won the 2010 Jesuit Secondary Education Association (JSEA) Award at U of D Jesuit. The description for the award is as follows. "Who models the ideal graduate of Jesuit Education by being: Intellectually Competent, Open to Growth, Religious, Loving, and Committed to Doing Justice in Generous Service to the People of God.” Mike, his older brother also received this award when he graduated from U of D. The award goes to someone who has dedicated his high school years to doing Christian service and being a leader throughout the school.
